This vertebra is characterized by the absence of the shaft, while it has arches - anterior and posterior - and the lateral parts connecting the arches, on which there are articular surfaces for connection with the occipital bone from the upper side and articular surfaces for connection with the rotational vertebra from the lower side. The front arch has a small bump in the front, and the back arch is equipped with a bump instead of the spinous process from the back. Kręg szczytowy; atlas - pierwszy kręg szyjny, na którym spoczywa czaszka. Kręg ten odznacza się brakiem trzonu, posiada natomiast łuki – przedni i tylny – oraz łączące te łuki części boczne, na których znajdują się powierzchnie stawowe dla połączenia z kłykciami kości potylicznej od strony górnej i powierzchnie stawowe dla połączenia z kręgiem obrotowym od strony dolnej.  Łuk przedni posiada z przodu niewielki guzek, a łuk tylny zamiast wyrostka kolczystego zaopatrzony jest od tyłu również w guzek.[1]1.Kręg szczytowy; J.
